brushapocalypse: Explaining a thing (Analysis)

so i was rereading parts of paranatural bc it’s good, it’s a good comic and i like it, but also i noticed a little inconsistency that bugged me. that being the way isabel’s bangs point.

At first, I thought this was an oversight by Zack— but then it occurred to me, I never noticed this in the earlier chapters. And then I checked, and confirmed that Isabel’s hair stays consistent in the first four chapters. It’s only in chapter 5 that it starts flipping around.

…Flipping. Sort of like the power she got from Flipflop.

With that thought in mind, here’s a collection of all the times I caught Isabel’s hair changing orientations:

[Pages 208 and 209: Isabel flips herself and the door around. Her bangs now point the other way. First time she uses this power, first time her bangs change orientation.]

[Pages 235 and 245: We don’t see Isabel for a little while between these panels, and there’s no indication that she flipped herself in that time but also no indication that she didn’t. Results inconclusive.]

[Pages 248 and 259: I expected it to flip around when she does the actual flipping, but it doesn’t? She’s definitely doing a whole lot of flipping in this fight tho.]

[Pages 259 and 261: We can’t see her hairline in the second image, but the bangs point the other way.]

[Page 262: Easy to miss since she flipped vertically, but her bangs point the other way again! It’s hard to tell if they change with all of her flips on this page, but…]

[Page 263: On the next page, her hair seems to be pointing the other way! Though it’s also very messy and very hard to make sense of in the rest of the page, so could be a false alarm.]

[Page 265: Her hair flipped, even though she didn’t. Again, could be a false alarm since her hair is getting very messy around here.]

[Page 267: One last mysterious hair-flip. For the rest of the chapter, Isabel’s hair stays like this.]

Conclusion: ???

It’s still pretty inconsistent, but her hair only starts flipping around after she gets the ability to flip herself, and stops flipping once everything’s calmed down. I’ll be sure to keep an eye on the matter in future chapters, but for now, what’s your opinion? Is Zack Morrison a genius or just not paying attention? Vote now on your phones!

[wigglecoin: Sometimes... hair... gets messed with and doesn’t always look exactly the same all the time.. I have bangs myself and they aren’t like in a fixed position they move around when I turn my head a little bit like swish swooch, I think that it doesn’t always look the same makes it realistic]

i get what you’re saying, and i did acknowledge when her hair is being particularly messy and so hard to qualify, but it shouldn’t just completely switch which side the part is on like it does— i did look over the rest of the comic before that point, and as far as i could tell this is the closest it gets before she meets flipflop:

and that’s when she’s turning very suddenly, so her hair moves accordingly. but overall when she has bangs, they stay on one side of her face, even when she changes hairstyles.

i’ll admit, i could be completely off-base here! since, again, it’s not super consistent about when it happens. still, i felt like it was worth compiling. if anyone’s got any examples of the part moving around pre-flipflop, feel free to let me know! i’m just here to throw random details at the wall and see what sticks.

[ry--chu: i do that too. a lot of artists just have bangs or the back of the hair flip when the character faces a different direction]

@ry--chu you’re right! that’s a thing a lot of people do, including myself sometimes. zack even does it too with some characters, as seen here:

[Chapter 5 Page 283: Cody’s hair behaves as described above, flipping when he turns his head.]

But not with Isabel, and here’s the proof! And do note that these aren’t the only pages I’m looking at, it’s just a small selection because I’m not going to compile every single time Isabel shows up on-screen. If there’s some counter-evidence I missed, I promise you it’s a genuine oversight on my part.

[Chapter 1 Page 54: Isabel turns her head, but her hair stays parted on the same side.]

[Chapter 2 Page 13: Isabel’s hair is a mess, but still parted on the same side as in C1.]

[Chapter 2 Page 28: Her hair is tied back and also in a hood, so there’s no visible part, but the little curl sticking out stays on the left side of her face.]

[Chapter 3 Page 53: Her hair is once more pulled back and hidden in a hood, and this time there’s not even a strand of hair to give us a frame of reference. So it doesn’t speak one way or the other. I’m just including it to cover all the chapters.]

[Chapter 4 Page 6: Still no part, but the strand sticking out is on the same side as always.]

[Chapter 4 Page 7: She untied her hair! The part briefly returns, but we don’t need it that much because we can still see that her hair falls over the left side of her face more than the right.]

[Chapter 4 Page 26: Back to having a full-time part, it’s right where it always is.]

[Chapter 4 Page 82: Tied back, but the loose strand of hair stays on her left.]

[Chapter 4 Page 151: Getting pretty redundant at this point.]

[Chapter 5 Page 12: Very Tiny Isabels, but we can see her hair stays consistent.]

[Chapter 5 Page 28: We can see the art style starting to shift, but her bangs still point to her left.]

[Chapter 5 Page 132: That little cowlick-thing that makes it super obvious which way her hair is facing has long-since shown itself at this point, making it very clear that her hair still faces the same way!]

[Chapter 5 Page 173: I was wrong actually, there IS a bit of cheating angles in Isabel’s hair! You see that little sorta, idk what to call it, those two spikes sticking out? They’re on our left in the first image, and our right in the second. The part’s still where it’s always been, though.]

[Chapter 5 Page 208: The moment of truth. Right before Isabel flips…]

[Chapter 5 Page 214: …And after. I wanted to grab something from the page it happens on, but Isabel doesn’t turn her head on that page. Still, after it flips, it stays consistent with its new orientation, at least up until P245. I’m not gonna try and make sense of what goes on in the Hijack fight hair-wise, so…]

[Chapter 5 Page 272: After the fight, Isabel’s hair is back the way it used to be, right down to the part. Also, the way I pasted the images together makes it look like Isabel is meeting her clone! That doesn’t have anything to do with her hair, I just wanted to comment on it.]

In conclusion, please don’t doubt me about anything ever again. I clearly can’t resist the urge to spend hours compiling evidence. Please. Please I have other things I need to get to I can’t do this all day.
